I'm waiting for the Canterwood board before I upgrade... should I buy a Western Digital 200 GB SE Hard drive w/ 8 mb cache now? I have a great deal.. the above hd for only $133. The question in my mind is whether the HD will be outdated next month when Canterwood is released.. will there be a new HD standard for the fancy new board? I am a gamer if that helps at all. Thanks!

LOL @ outdated!

Yes thats a good price.
Yes its a good drive.
No it WILL NOT be outdated.
At the moment Pata is being phased out in favour of Sata, bt the process is very gradual, and there are no performance benefits of Sata yet. Pata will be around for a long time yet.

I think the performance benefits of Sata will become significant when the
bandwidth scheme of 300MB/s is released in the future.

How so? Hard drives will still be basically the same, with the same transfer rates.
Sure there might be more 10k rpm IDE drives floating around, but they still can only transfer a max of 55-65MB/sec.

DarkAmeba:

Are you aware that you need a controller that supports 48-bit LBA to break the "137 gb barrier". The retail version (at $133 I suspect that one is OEM) comes with a Promise Technology ATA100 TX2 controller with 48-bit LBA support. 48-bit LBA support is included in the ATA133 specification, but it is not required in the ATA100 specification. Some ATA100 controllers include 48-bit LBA support, many do not.

To err is human... to really screw things up you need a computer!

IF you've seen the harddrive box.. :D
You'd know that it comes with a controller card
