I am currently looking at adding a DVD burner to my computer. If I continue
to keep the current disk storage in my system I will have to add a IDE
controller which installs in a PCI port.
Has anybody had experience with using and IDE controller on an PCI port?
What are the negatives to this arrangement? Are there known problems with
the bios or operating system recognizing the IDE controller? Is the
performance the same as an IDE controller on the motherboard?

Performance should be the same, with the CPU utilisation possibly slightly lower.

Most of the time all you do is install the card, install the drivers for it, plug in the drive and off you go.
