Hello everyone,
I just purchased a USA Fender Stratocaster 50th Anniversary guitar.
I am starting to use it on Pro Tools LE 5.0. However, I notice that the
guitar lets out a little hum. Is this a defect? (GOSH I HOPE NOT)!!
Is this just the way Strats are? Is there something I can do to stop this
hum? I really hope so.

I tried my Carvin and there was no hum at all.

Thanks for your help.

Does your Carvin have double-coil pickups or single?

Hi Neil,
I really don't know. Sorry.

Don't worry. It's a common Strat character. Is there any chance you're
sitting close to your monitor while playing? What kind of lights do you
have? Single coil pick-ups hum a little. Turn your monitor off while
recording takes or buy a flat screen. enjoy the sound of your new
instrument. It's a great sound.

Sounds to me like your Carvin has either active or Humbucker pickups in
it. Different design of pick-ups.

this is one of the reasons why positions "2" & "4" are popular on Strats -
they combine 2 pickups, reducing the hum.

They also sound nice!!

This is also the reason that DiMarzio HS3's and Hot Rail style pickups are
popular - you can retrofit them to get a quiet, fat humbucker sound, without
needing to rout out your guitar.

Good luck!!

Quite often, the hum is minimized if you stand at one particular
position in the room -- try turning around while listening to the hum
level. Stay a good ways away from any CRT monitors -- but you'll also
pick up some hum off many other electric/tronic devices.

A bit of hum's to be expected -- ADA used to make an amp emulator for
recording which actually had a knob to dial in a bit of hum to enhance
the realism.
