Wireless adapter for desktop windows 8

When I try to set up a desktop wireless USB adapter, do I have to connect directly to the Netgear wireless router that I have in a different room? When I try to hook it up, it looks like it is going to work. I can see my wirless name that is already set up. But when I choose the correct wireless internet name, it fails and restarts my desktop. My desktop also has Windows 8. I am using a Netgear adapter WNA1100. Please tell me wht I am doing wrong... Thank you, Sunshine.

Did you install the latest BETA DRIVER for your adapter? You do not need to connect to the router to get the adapter working if the network has already been working with other devices. You only need a wired connection to initially configure the router's wireless features.
