I've been hearing that for quite a long time now. But my friend's LCD can change resolution. When he play BroodWar he was switched to 640x400. So can anyone tell me if LCDs can change their resoultion or not!? Sorry I'm a newbie.

they can... but you have to remember that the actual number of pixels is allways fixed. Thus to display other resolutions the image will be stretched/squeezed and corrected to fit the set dimensions.
Things may look strange or blocky from time to time.

As poobaa said, the image won't look as sharp and good when it is at scaled resolutions. In places where it's whole numbers, ie 1280x960-> 640x480 it's ok, but in most cases it's a fraction, and u can't have 1/2 a pixel so it tries to compensate and thus makes image look bad. Overall not reccomended.

Hilbert space is a big place.

Some LCD monitors (such as those made by Eizo) have some sort of built-in image smoothing function that allows LCDs to give pretty good display at non-native resolutions. I haven't actually seen how it looks. So not sure if it works.
