I'm trying to master directly to Sound Forge from Sonar. I use a Tascam
DM-24 console and a MOTU 2408 interface via TDIF with the latest software
update from MOTU. I'm working in Windows XP and for some reason, I can't
get a SPDIF signal from the MOTU into Sound Forge (but if I do it's only
tracks 1 & 2.) I'm trying to bet a main bus mix. Would you guys have a
solution? Otherwise we just keep mastering to a DAT, then dump SPDIF into
Sound Forge from the DAT and it's too time consuming. Thanks.
Which version of SF are you using? From my experience w/ SF, there are
only 2 tracks as it is a wave editing program.

If I am understanding your question corectly, then you have no reason to use
any outboard gear.
If you record in Sonar, export the song to a wave file(assuming you know how
to do that), then import the wave file into Sound Forge for mastering.
If I understand your question incorecly, then this won't help<g>

You are trying to play it out of Sonar, back out through the Tascam, and
then back into Soundforge? Why?
I'm playing multitrack from Sonar, playing back through my MOTU where I need
to get the "mixed" stereo wave (mixed on my DM 24) out of the MOTU and into
SF 4.0. Both softwares are running simaltaneously in Win XP. Mabye my DM
24 has a SPDIF I/O? I need to check. That might work.

The essence of his question is that since you could do a complete
mixdown completely within Sonar, why are you trying to do it the way you
are?
Sometimes it's easier to help if one can understand _why_ someone is
doing what they're doing. If you said you were coming out of Sonar into
a decent analog board, then we'd know why you were doing it, whether or
not any one of us agreed about the benefits or detriments of that
approach. But coming out of a DAW to mix in a digital console and then
get back into the Wave editor is a confuserational kinda thing.

So you are sending multiple channels (not just the stereo mix) to the DM24
and mixing on the DM24 (and I'm assuming EQ'ing and adding effects from the
DM24) and want to capture the output of the DM24 as a stereo file with
Soundforge?

I hope that's what he's tryin to do. I'm f'n confused<g>

But why ? Why not just render the Sonar project to a stereo wav file (
mixing is basic functionality of all multitrack software) instead of using
the DM24, then load that file into SF directly ? Or are you desparate to
use outboard mixer and FX ?
I want to be able to use my automated hardware console, the DM24 to do the
mixing of all my multitrack sonar outputs in real time and record the stereo
output (from the mix) to sound forge via the same MOTU interface. It this
possible? How do you guys master multitrack on a DAW?
I used to use a function in cool edit pro that would "mix" all the waves
in the multitrack queue, but it was a one button operation that digitally
merged the files together at set levels, thus not giving me any control over
the mix. I'm not looking for a function to do that sort of thing. Thanks

Why don't you just use the DM24 as a control surface to control the faders
in Sonar and just mix right inside Sonar?

Well, obviously you have to run both programs at the same time, which
may be tricky since they're sharing the same hardware audio interface.
I dunno. But you could mix back to a couple more tracks in Sonar, then
transfer those tracks to Sound Forge if you want to use that for final
tweaking and CD burning.

The idea of this sort of mixing is that you DO control the mix, but
you do it by writing volume automation on the tracks, either static or
dynamic (whatever the song calls for, probably both). When you get it
so that you can just push the PLAY button and you don't think the mix
needs any more adjustment, then you push the button to mix the tracks
(as you hear them) to a new stereo track. But unless you use your DM24
as a control surface for the Sonar mixer (which I'm sure is possible)
you don't have the hands-on control this way.

Normal practice is to mix in the DAW app using whatever system of volume,
pan, FX send level, FX paramet ENVELOPES which can be entered by mouse,
control surface, or onboard mixer-simulator sliders.

I suspect that you missed out al the 'sophisticated' bits before clicking
that button. Maybe a quick read of the manual may be in order, as yyou
seeeme to have missed out a lot of the basic functionality of a DAW ? I
haven't touched my mixer as a 'mixer' for years.
That being said, you should be able to do what you suggest if you puter has
enough ommmph. But maybe better record back into Sonar so you don't have
two applications trying to use your MOTU at the same time, competing for
clocks and driver and synch and stuff. Then save the resultant Sonar file
and load it into SF for whatever you want to do there.
It seems to me that around $375 bucks these days will build you a nice Intel
based PC, add a good digital only soundcard and you could share the monitor,
keyboard and mouse.... then mix through the digital desk with this secondary
box hooked up as a 2-track machine. Voila'! A dedicated editing and premastering
station with Sound Forge and CD Architect. No hardware or software conflicts.
