A friend has GPS capability on her phone (not sure what provider) that
allows her to go into some menu and actually see the longitude and latitude.

Is this feature typical of phones with GPS capability?

Is it possible to view the GPS info on a Sanyo RL-4920 (I'd try myself but I
don't own one yet).

If not, on which Sprint phones is this possible?

Sprint didn't seem to know much when I emailed them. They just said that
the phone had GPS for e911 and that they were planning on offering a GPS
service in the future.

If the phone has GPS hardware in it, I shouldn't need a service to look at
the data. :P

Unless something has changed sprintpcs has not revealed what the
programming interface or any method of accessing the gps capabilities of
their phones. Sprintpcs has said they will have a service built around the
gps features but I do not believe they have said explicitly what that
service is and or if they will give third party developers free access to
methods of accessing gps features of the phone. Sprintpcs does have a
developers site and do give out information on their phones so hopefully
they won't require some kind of license agreement for gps feature set.

Nextel.

Generally no. Not yet anyway.

Probably not.

None that I know of.

It doesn't, at least not something like what a bona fide GPS receiver
would have. The system partially depends on fixed station equipment at
the cell sites.
