Your link didn't work fo me, but they have several kinds of GAFF
tape at Markertape - under Gaff tape, of course. The Permacel in black
is pretty typical.

Under your link there are several to choose from (with similar "the best"
description). Which is truly best and is the Permacel brand worth the
significant yards shorter (25 yd) than the others (at 60 yds) ?
Thanks!

I dunno, never A/B'ed 'em, I mostly just use what they buy at
work. Worth trying a roll I guess. Being kinda - err, "thrifty" - I
tend to buy tape myself when one of the MI stores I troll decides to
blow stuff out, I have 14 rolls of Artists tape I got for $.99 each
that way.

I have used that exact kind of permacel gaffer's tape from Markertek in my
studio on the hardwood floor with no peeling of the finish or nasty residue.
You should be OK with that tape.

Would it be safe to leave the tape in place for days or weeks, in a
semi-permanent situation, without any residue probs later on ? See, I mic a
piano's underlid with a PZM and love the results so much that I don't want
to remove the mic/tape after each session.
Thanks Doug.

Would it be safe to state that the Permacel P-672 - Professional grade
Gaffer is one of the best Gaff tapes out-there ?
Thanks,

It would be safer to say that I have no idea if it would ruin the finish of
a piano. I've only used it on the floor.

Days, yes. Weeks, no. I use the Markertek gaffer's tape on floors,
pianos, walls, etc. for temp mic mounts as you describe along with
cable management at concerts. The tape will not leave a residue short
term. Longer than a couple of weeks and it will start to deteriorate,
especially on rubber cables, and become gooey around the edges. When
this happens, it's not a hard cleanup if you catch it quickly. Less
than a couple of weeks and it works just like it says, no fuss and no
mess.

That would be risky. Gaffer tape isn't intended to be left in place for
long.
Indoors it lasts months on 5 gallon plastic buckets.
Outdoors on a motorbike, the adhesive turns to a nasty dried out crust
fairly quickly.
Gaffer tape will peel paint off walls, if left on for more than a couple
hours, or minutes.
As for a piano, you might get away with it on heavy black laquer. (I
personally, wouldn't try it)
Indoors peeling up the finish, is a bigger concern, than residue.

What you might want to try is first wrapping some Artist's Tape around
the piano lid. Actually, I'm not sure the name "Artist's Tape" is
specific enough to convey what I'm thinking of; 3M makes (or made) a
green translucent tape designed for architects so that they could tack
stuff to plans & peel it off effortlessly w/ zero residue.
Anyway, get some of this 3M green tape & wrap it completely around the
piano lid (so that it overlaps itself)in 2 places: 1 just in front of
where the PZM will be, & the other just behind where the PZM will be.
You now have a surface to which you can liberally apply as much Gaff
Tape as you would ever need which protects the piano finish & can be
removed from the piano any time in the future with no detrimental side
effects.
In case you're wondering why you couldn't just tape the PZM to the
piano lid w/ this green tape...because it's incredibly flimsy & hard to
work with. Wrapping a flat piano lid gives it something wide & flat to
gain purchase on, & wrapping it around on itself gives it a strength it
otherwise wouldn't have.

I have used permacel gaff tape on Grand piano quite often with no
problems. But if have any doubt try the tape you have on a small out
of sight as area a test.

Might even improve the sound. Like the green pen on the rim of a CD
