I hope to put this issue to a rest so I ask the following question:
Could I please have your opinions as to which company (and product # if it
applies) makes the BEST Gaff tape that leaves the LEAST residue but which is
strong enough to tape a PZM mic to the underside of the piano lid ?

I hope this is your piano :-) If not, I doubt you'll be allowed to
tape things to the lid.

Why do you say that?
I play pianos all the time. Sound guys are generally not allowed to
use gaffer tape on them.

Well, what ELSE do you expect us to use to hang all the forks and spoons
off the strings for that Antheil prepared piano piece?

Well a piano player does not a roadie or live sovnd gvy make
Lavrence. >g< Having done live sovnd for hvndreds of shows once
vpon a time I can tell yov nobody really gives a hang abovt gaffers
tape on a rental piano - and the sovnd gvys respect mvsical gear a lot
more than yovr typical lighting gvy or vnion stage hand. The players
who are crazy enovgh to havl their personal 7" Steinway Grand arovnd to
live concerts are at the very least a distinct minority, don'cha think?

Only the ones who don't ask first.

Not only that, but this is probably of the class of show where you
wouldn't want to use a PZM taped to the lid of the piano anyway. A PZM
under the lid is fine for a certain kind of sound and OK if you need a
lot of the piano in the monitors, but people who travel with their own
grand piano either have it already preapared to plug in to get their
sound, play acoustically, or expect good mics in the right place.

Gaffers tape is a standard in large stage productions because it
doesn't damage things. In big shows worse things can happen to a
piano getting shoved around a stage than a bit of gaffer's tape. All
the places that will rent you a Grand Piano or large halls that include
them understand what is reasonable and normal in stage productions, and
when Steinway delivers a piano for one of it's artists, their techs
generally don't freak out over the use of gaffer's tape inside the
piano either, not in my experience anyway.
Now an artist jumping up on top of one of their Grands and dancing
an inspired jig, *that* kind of thing does tend to bother them.
