I've been trying to find a low (<400ms) latency WAN service for years.
I have GPRS now and it's certainly not the answer. Even EDGE looks
like it might not be satisfying.
(I'm a longtime multi-phone SprintPCS customer. If this works I'll be
happy to stay with them but I'm also watching for Verizon to expand
EV-DO coverage.)

I have seen 1X with latency of 200 - 400ms.
I get about 250ms with my Air Card.
EV-DO Gives me between 100 - 200ms this is with the aircard 580.

I called the nearest Sprint Store. We don't have EV-DO here and the
only PCMCIA card they have is the Merlin C201.
I'm seeing latency reports of 250-700ms for it.
http://www.patents.com/pcs/ http://www.tummy.com/articles/laptops/merlin-c201/ Is it likely that this card yields greater latency than an AirCard?
I'm considering trying it today if I have time. I'm sure it's not
trivial to try it and return it so I'd appreciate knowing if it's
unlikely to work for me.

That might be about right, it varies alot from network to network.
EV-DO,when out with Sprint will have low latency 100 - 200ms. And they will
have the Aircard 580. What app are you running? Citrix?
