That's what is says here:
<A HREF="http://www.samsungusa.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?eUser=&prod_id=DS17BSDSV&selTab=Specifications" target="_new">http://www.samsungusa.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?eUser=&prod_id=DS17BSDSV&selTab=Specifications</A>

I'm not sure if that's correct information since most PVA panels are 25 ms, but that's the "official" stance of Samsung.

As far as calibration, look here for what Tom's recommends: <A HREF="http://www.tomshardware.com/display/20031105/lcd-19.html" target="_new">http://www.tomshardware.com/display/20031105/lcd-19.html</A>

Also, see if this toolkit can help you out as far as calibration is concerned: <A HREF="http://www.monitorsdirect.com/toolkit/" target="_new">http://www.monitorsdirect.com/toolkit/</A>

well i don't get it... in your link it says pva, here: http://www.samsung.com/Products/Monitor/LCDMonitor/Monitor_LCDMonitor_172X_sp.htm it says tn, and i really don't understand this sentence in xbitlabs' review: "It may turn out, though, that Samsung starts putting fast TN+Film matrixes into the 172X series monitors and this will change them completely. SyncMaster 172X will become yet another gaming model."
kinda confusing...
about my Viewsonic - yeah I already saw that page on thg, it just said they lowered the contrast by 2 notches. well... ok i think i will stick with it, and the brightness is currently at 40/50, guess it's ok. thanks for the third link, i'll check it out

Well from what I've read, sometimes a company will change the panel of a particular model of LCD, such as the Q17, without changing the model number for whatever reason. Whether this has or will happen with the 172X, I'm not sure. I'm also not sure which of the two Samsung pages is most up to date, but I do know that their marketing department is in charge of what goes on the web site, and sometimes they don't have the correct information. The page you did show me, however, didn't have quite a few of their models listed, so that may be a clue as to the authenticity of that information. In any case, reputable sites such as Newegg that sell it classify it as a PVA, so that's probably the information I would go with.

Anyway, good luck with your monitor.

172X is a TN+Film, only a first batch of evaluation samples were furnished with a 25ms PVA matrix, all retail 172x are 12ms TN+Film.
