Where I live, there is only an analog service available. I am wondering if
there is some sort of digital transmitter that i could purchase to hook up
to my computer with which to transmit ringtones, data, etc. to my phone.
Please help me out. Is there some other way i could get ringtones and such?

It might be easier to just drive to an a digital area and download what
you need ...

Ok, I'll bite. If you only have analog service where you live, why are you
staying with SPCS?

First, I cannot drive to a digital area. I live in Nome, AK. I am not with
SPCS either. I have my MSL and therefore I can use another carrier.
Unfortunately Nome only offers analog (AMPS) and the A620 looked like a good
choice. Too bad BitPim doesn't yet support it (YET!). I like the use of cell
phones and I wish there was better service here, but for now i guess i have
to use what i have...

You should probably look on EBay for an old 2 watt bagphone! You will
get far more bang for you bug up there in Nome.

I got the A620 because it had a camera as well as AMPS (the only service
here in Nome). I don't know if a bagphone would do me much good as far as
reception or anything like that because the local tower only has a range of
several miles (basically line-of-sight, if you can't see nome, you won't be
getting good reception).

I don't know much about the A620, but, can you buy an external antenna
adapter for it? If so, there are several vendors out there who sell
bidirectional cell-phone signal amplifiers (essentially turning your
phone into a bag phone). You'll also need an external antenna. I
myself have an amplifier, and it does help in rural fringe areas.
Mine works on both CDMA and AMPS, and is FCC approved.

A bag phone will have a more powerful transmitter [usually about 10 times
that of your A620] and a much bigger antenna indicating that it should
have more sensitive reception. In the end, I am sure you will do better
with one if you must use AMPS only in an area such as yours.
