Please help.
I currently have a RAID System on an A7V333 board with the promise 20276 controller. It consists of 2 identical 60GB Seagate Barracuda ATA IVs. Both are Parallel ATA.

I am thinking of upgrading my board so that it will take an XP 2500+ / 2600+ (I only have rev 1.x). Anyway all of the new Asus boards available to me here in the UK come with Serial ATA for the RAID system - the Promise 20376. Normally there is 1 PATA port which will only take 1 master device and then 2 SATA ports.

My questions are these:
If I switched to a RAID A7V8X for example (KT400) would I be able to use a SATA - PATA adapter on 1 drive and plug that in to the SATA port and then plug the other drive in to the PATA port to create my RAID system?

If yes to the previous question, will I be able to keep my current array intact without having to recreate / re-install Windows?

I only ask these questions because you are supposed to use 2 identical drives for RAID and I am worried that the drive with the adapter on will not perform the same as it is doing now in normal PATA mode through a PATA controller. If the adapter slows things down much then I will lose the benefit of the RAID 0 array.

Cheers Guys.

I don't currently have any evidence to back this up, but I don't think it will work. I'm fairly certain that I've read something to this extent either in a review or possibly a manual. If it's in your budget, I'd go for a HighPoint RocketRAID 1520 (2-channel) or 1540 (4-channel) adapter card (check this page: <A HREF="http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/20030204/serial_ata..." target="_new">http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/20030204/serial_ata...;/A> ). I've been running the 1540 for about 6 months w/no problems. Both come with SATA-PATA adapters included! I hope this helps a little.
