Hi
I just wondering what would happen if I sent a check for $20 to Sid at
fraxis?
With a letter something like this

Sir
I would like to thank you for writeing the CIV games.
I really enjoyed them please find enclosed check.

1. Who do I make the check out to?<not to you guys ;)>
2.Where would I send it ?
3.Could they cash it ?

I would rather pay the people who create the games not some corp suit money
guy.
I want to pay the people who did the work not EA or Hasbro.
Same with music I would send the artist the $1.00 he would have made from
the song and not suport the music corp.

Probably wouldn't cash it but who knows. Make it out to him if
you really want to send him the money.

Why not just buy a couple of copies and hope it shows up on his
yearly bonus?

What about all the programmers, artists and other assorted people that make
the game? You gonna write checks for them too? The days of buying the 5
1/4" floppy in a plastic bag at Radio Shack are long gone.

Are they?

There are a significant number of gamers turning away from things you find
on the store shelves of the megastores, but instead looking to buy on-line
from guys who code games for a niche marketplace. GalCiv made most of it's
profit from Drengen, The SE series, Dominions, all kinds of wargames, Tons
of Arcade games....Is Darwinia on store shelves?

Won't shock me if in 10 years developers who bypass publishers and go on
their own are probably the only place I will be looking for games.

We can only hope. My best memories *are* going 40 miles out of my way to
hit the *one* RS in the area that actually sold the things. I'd like to see
more developers go the direct route.

Just send him a greeting card. I'm sure he would appreciate that just
as much. He's got enough money of his own already.

And how do you pay all the other people involved in making the song?
Even if you eliminate the creation of physical media, there's still
techies, the guys in the recording studio, etc, etc, etc. Unless
you're buying/downloading a recording the band made in their garage,
you're screwing a lot of other people. It's not like the rest of the
cost of the CD is just cash going into an executive's pocket -- most
of it does to support the huge production chain, as well as paying for
the roughly 99 out of 100 CDs which lose money -- profits from the few
hits pay for the vast majority of music, movies, and television.

I really wish they taught economics instead of self-esteem in public
schools.

Why go all the way to Asia when he could just go down the street to your
sister's house.

Other people are paid by the artist. If you've created some great music and
wanted to record it, you'd have to pay for the studio and the technical
personnel to do the recording out of your own pocket. So if you want to
support those people, send more money to the artist. If artists will be
getting more profit from their music, it will support recording studios
too.

Here, here! I'm already doing that for the most part, since the PC
space at many of my local stores are shrinking by the month, and
less and less of what big publishers turn out at Best Buy interests me these
days. My purchases are from mostly small indie/web devs, and has been
for about a year or so.

I think IMHO, with the current direction the market
forces are going, its only a matter of time before it becomes pretty
standard for many PC game devs to direct much of their
marketing online, or at least partially self-publish their stuff. The
numbers at retail just don't add up anymore.

Yep, in the UK at least. I was in the Durham branch of Game on Friday,
and there it was - slap-bang in the middle of the PC games section, at
eye level, with the box front facing you rather than the spine like a
lot of titles. Priced at £29.99, which is cheap for Game.

It's been well reviewed in the UK, with PC Gamer giving it a Must Buy award
(the logo for which is on the Darwinia box). It scored 90%, and the
review was fully four pages, the same length as the reviews for GTR and
KOTOR2. They also had the demo on the cover disc.

I asked a member of staff about Hearts of Iron 2, and he told me that
they sell out almost as soon as they get stock in (although as it's a
small store they get them in batches of ten). Said it was a good game,
too.

I'll be buying both once I get my computer accounts course out of the
way.
