Do a search on rec.audio.pro and you'll see, one of the best
compressors, and Fletchers favorite for guitars is an Ashly SC
50, preferrably the original blue face model with toggle switch. This
thing sounds great and smokes the later black face models. Check it out

here on ebay.

Did you notice Fletcher's comments about your talking about his
appreciation for the comp? Given any thought to getting specific?
Because it ain't his "favorite for guitars" without some qualification
of the statement.

Nobody in their right mind would call an Ashly SC50 "one of the best
compressors". And yes, I have one right here. It's a trick'and-a-half
pony. It also doesn't "sound great" in any rational sense of "great".
It's a tool for one or two situations, nowhere near as versatile as an
RNC.

I kinda like my little Ashly CL-52e boxes for a lot of things... but my
name's not Fletcher. <g>

well....not really the same observation, read the quotes again. Hank
said..."They're good for lots of things, a load of effective fun, a
handy tool, totally awesome, flavor to die for & a cool tool." That
goes beyond what Fletcher even said about 'em (I can't imagine Fletcher
calling ANY piece of gear "totally awesome!" ), and obviously is WAY
above "decent". Sorry if I was too general about Fletcher only liking
it on lead guitar, but if you do a search, you'll find many more users
here who enjoy it on many other sources, even the guy who designed the
RNC. I mean come on, ART comps & Alesis 3630's sell for the same price,
which would you rather have in your rack?

Most uninformed folks would probably say the 3630, for the two mono channels,
the warranty, and all of the superfluous, half operable, add-on bells and whistles.

I wasn't exactly born yesterday, so if I could get 2 SC-50s for the price of a 3630....

;-)

In all seriousness, it's a fine little mono compressor. I have 6 channels of CL-52e,
just a few years post the SC-50, and I wouldn't consider selling them unless I could
pay off a lot of bills with the profit.
