Yes, and its spelt "Bodhrán". Pronounce boh-RAHN. In Gaelic, the "h"
after the "d" causes the "d" to be silent. (Like the "h" after the "b"
in "Siobhan" causes the "b" to sound like a "v" - and I thought English
spelling was goofy!)

Not something you wish to be seen with in public... Unless of course it
has the Guinness logo on it! The genuine ones are made with a good
quality goat-skin.

Sorry, can't help you there. I live in the UK and bought mine in a
music store in Dublin (no kitsch decoration on the skin!)
Tried a Google search?

My first choice would be a Fred Halpin bodhran. He created a tunable
bodhran (patented, apparently) that works quite well. Fred's website
hasn't been updated for a while but it's worth a call to see if he's
still making them.

I purchased a Cooperman about 12 years ago and it has served me well
(it's on its 4th head).
I purchased via mail order from Lark in the Morning in Mendicino, CA.

Apparantly a few have bought them. Halpin may have developed the first
tunable bodhrans, but there are others doing it as well. The best ones in
the states, IMO, come from Albert Alphonso, down in the Dallas area. Most
of the players taught by my brother in law have gone on to use them.
Where to see them played in the Chicago/Milwaukee area:

Typically in live use, my preference for micing is from behind, with a kick
drum mic, and/or a clip on drum mic. The list includes:
AKGD112
EV N/D 868
Audix D6
EV RE20
AKG C418 clip on
Shure Beta 98 clip on
Although on our last album we used a pair of D112 about 18-24 inches either
side in a drum room-big sound!

appear to be hide ;-)
