I'm currently a design student and I always hear that DVI shows better quality. Then I hear that DVI is only for LCD monitors. Since I have a FE950+ (nec) monitor, and a Ti 4600 (that has a DVI output jack) if I buy a DVI to VGA converter will there be a noticible difference in my display? id it worth getting the converter or is it just marketing hype? or is DVI really for LDCs only?
You are right, DVI is for digital display only, your analog monitor can't use DVI and you can't get better display by using DVI-VGA convertor becuase you only doing the same job by converting the digital signal to analog and that's how your VGA port is for.
You never know how stupid you are until you have done something stupid enough for you to realize it.

The difference in DVI and regular VGA is not really noticable. I tried on my LCD that support both DVI and regular VGA. I did not notice any difference.
You can try it... but I think you'll run smack into the limitations of your display.
The source of the display signal digital or analog is the same, DVI is just a different way of transmitting the signals. So the display quality of the video Card won't be any especially different between the two ports.
If anything is limiting your display quality, even with a high end monitor, it's the monitor itself. With analog signals you run into all kinds of stuff that subtly interferes with the purity of the signal. Unfortunately most of these things are inside the monitor itself.
For me DVI made a lot of difference. With VGA the monitor had a green tinge and it would automatically Re-allign itself in every new app (v. annoying), DVI gives a much better signal quality IMHO.
Yeah I suppose LCDs are Digital bdcause the pixels are either on or off. In CRT's the electrons are deflected by magnets by a certain amount and so the whole system must be analog.
