From my experience, none consistently and satisfactorily....to do so
involves phase inversion of a stereo image, and most modern recordings are
mixed so intricately, that the results are usually unsatisfactory.
The best 'attempt' could be Adobe Audition (formally Cool Edit Pro) and it's
Centre Channel Extractor process.

The usual way to "remove" vocals is to invert the polarity of one channel, then
sum them. This perfectly cancels any strictly mono (components). However,
components "near" the center are weakened, and the signal is no mono.

Try this. Find a high-quality Dolby Pro-Logic decoder. Run the signal through
it, discarding the Center output and keeping the Left and Right. There are
likely to be audible artifcats, but you'll have to try it and see whether it
meets your needs.

What program ? The government's new program TVOOSI "Take Vocals Out Of
Songs Intiative". The aim is to totally eradicate vocalists from the blight
they impose of otherwise great music.

Or if you are in PC-world, try the DX plugin VREMOVER from www.analogx.com
which automatically does the inverting/summing thang. Unfortunately that
process removed all 'centre' info , which usually includes bass. Works fine
of centre-panned untreated vox, but any stereo process, reverb, etc will
reduce the effectiveness.
