ok. what i want to know is, if i have the ADAT lightpipe connected AND
8 analog ins connected, would i be able to record 16 sim. trks of audio
through a MOTU 828 Mk I?
if so, short of getting an actual ADAT machine, can i get an analog to
ADAT lightpipe converter for the 2nd group of 8 inputs?

I'm pretty sure the new ONYX pre's from Mackie have ADAT out - might
make a nice little addition to the 828 if you're in the home/project
domain.

ok then.
i looked at the onyx but its not versatile enough for my live shows. i
use another mackie board thats 20 chs with built in fx. plus the onyx
would need an extrat 400+ bucks for the firewire option. not the
cheapest solution.
so...where do i find an ADAT converter and what do i look for?

There are several others, as well as some combo units
that include the analog-to-lightpipe function.
You also mentioned that you are aware of the ability
to use an ADAT 8 track for this, you might find an
M20 (24 bit converters).

i found the Behringer ADA8000. it does A/D/A conversion to and from
adat/analog.
would this give me 8 trks of recording to the MOTU 828 via lightpipe
SIMULTANEOUSLY with the 8 trks of analog recording?

You actually have capability of 18 in:
8 on the lightpipe, 8 onboard A-D, and 2 in on the SPDIF.
This is designed just like the DigiDesign 001, 002R,
and others.
