Damn, damn, damn, damn......my 120GB HD woke me up at 3:30am this morning. It was clicking and churning a horrible song of death. All of my porn, mp3's, bootleg software, movies are all gone!!! I almost cried. Well I replaced it with an 80GB and I'm going to get an external HD also. Good thing my other 80GB drive was ok. From now on everything I ever download is getting burned. I can't take loosing everything again. Just thought I would vent a little.

It was a Western Digital. I didn't really mind that the drive went bad. My curious ass had to go and open the drive to take a look inside. And what do I do next? I go and look up warranty info. on the drive. Gues what, it had a warranty and I ruined that warranty by breaking the seal. I AM STUPID......pooobaa what do you use for backup?

Yes... I have to admit that what you did was the most stupid thing ive seen this week... but its only monday so im sure someone else will beat you
Regarding backups i have a dual drive system
80Gb 800JB primary and 80Gb D740X as backup.
the primary drive has a 5Gb OS partition that gets backed up on a fortnightly basis. the rest is games and apps and downloaded music/porn. Occasionally i backup the savegames, and the music and porn goes onto the other drive... so should my primary drive die i really only loose the games... no big deal.
As for the secondary drive, It mostly contians Utilites, porn, movies, OS backups and music.
The pron, movies and music are dumped to cheap CD-R now and again. The OS backups i dont really worry about as its highly unlikely that both drives will die at the same time.
So if either drive dies i dont loose too much. just time and effort getting it back to where it was.

Do you run a RAID array? Well I have 2 80GB drives now. I'm going to purchase another 80GB drive along with an external enclosure with a USB 2.0 port. And I'm going to burn more often than I did before. I was most pissed about losing all of my mp3's. Do you back-up manually or do you run some type of automatic back-up?

My WD got attacked by a virus and I allmost freaked when I lost everything. All my files went invalid and I didnt backup anything. But I had a spare 40gig maXtor when my 160gig WD went down. I ran off of it and formatted the 160gig and started over with saved games and installs along with downloads. I had 100 gig on umm.. ISO's, music, porn, movies, videos, pictures, and many other stuff. I still have dreams and now I burn everything... to cd that is.

A long time ago I had a 2GB HDD which gave up the ghost just
2 weeks after its warranty expired (1 year). Had to backup
all my porn (over 450MB) into floppies. Manage to get the
job done before it finally kicked the bucket, it was a lot
of floppies. Got a 8GB HDD drive after that, but it too
went the same way as the first, but this time I had one
with a 3 year warranty, so was able to get a replacement
for it (yah!!). Got fed up with floppies and used my friend
CDRW to back up my porns and other stuff. Decided to get a
CDRW myself after that and now i do regular backup of
my data just in case any of the above scenario were to
repeat themselves.
The porn in the floppies were backup to CD-R also, but the
bad news is someone I knew stole the CD with that backup.
I never did move it back into the HD, so it's gone. It's
not the amount, but the futility of my effort to preserve
the porn only to have it stolen later.

I use a program called Agent. Here is there site <A HREF="http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php" target="_new">http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php</A>. You will want to get version 1.92 at least because that can decode yenc format. Don't know if there is a crack for ver 1.93. It's a nice little program. It took me a while to master the program but when you do you can do a lot with it. I wish my ISP would increase the bandwidth for the news servers. I used to get over 600k download when I first signed up years ago. Now I'm lucky if I get 50k download. But hey it's free so I can't complain much.

Nah.. I don't get anything off newsgroups. I don't even log into them anymore. All stuff I get now is uploaded to me. I was getting all the 0day stuff automatically, but my irc channel has sort of died out. I've got to find out where they've moved to. I don't log into it very often so have lost track of a few people. I still manage to get alot of new stuff.
Unfortunately I've had to tell people to chill on the uploads for a bit since my 600GB RAID5 array only has about 55GB free right now. I have 640GB of raw disk space sitting here next to me in boxes waiting to go into use, but alas, I'm waiting to rebuild the server in my Lian-Li PC-76 case after the Canterwoods come out and I shuffle MB/CPU's around. Not to mention having to get another 3ware IDE Raid controller. *sigh*

Man are you rich or are computers part of your job and you get parts really cheap?
On another note, this may sound like I'm a complete noob but I'm not. I've downloaded plenty of programs that run IRC many times and have tried to use it. I can get into different channels and stuff but I know there is so much more you can do with IRC. Are there any sites that give you a simple explaination of the different features of IRC? One thing is for sure IRC is the deepest chat system there is. Well any help would be appreciated...thanks guys.

Well I do have a well paying job, but basically I take advantages of some of the outstanding rebate offers that these companies have on their drives.
Example: WD2000JB drive.. CompUSA had them for $309.95 with $10 instant rebate, then WD had a $120 rebate on them making the final price $179.99. Now for a 200GB 8MB cache drive you can't beat that price, so naturally I bought two of them (relatives are great for mailing in rebates  )
I did the same thing a year ago with the WD1200JB drives when they first came out. I got $350 drives for < $230. Ended up getting 6 of them
So basically just keep your eyes open and take advantage of the specials and rebates when they come around.
As far as IRC goes, I'm far from an expert. I honestly barely enough to get me by. All these kids in the chan are running bots and scripts and all sorts of fancy stuff, and I just shake my head and sigh. haha
Do a Google on "IRC" "Tutorial" or "Script" and I'm sure you'll find a plethora of information though.

Cool I will check it out. I know what you mean about these rebates. It seems like there are more and more companies offering them. The drive that went bad on me was a WD 120GB that I bought at CompUSA for $300 but it had a rebate of $100 from WD. Did you know you can check your rebate at this <A HREF="http://www.wheresmyrebate.com/(d21vjciwzi4fqxurlvr1kz55)/Default.aspx" target="_new">site</A>. It's pretty sweet. They had rebates on that site which I did years ago. It's nice to see how much money you save when you add up all of your rebates you've gotten.

Here's an example of one of the Rebate offers. It says "Generic" but its actually a <A HREF="http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?produc..." target="_new">Maxtor 160GB 2MB Cache</A>. Granted, its only 2MB cache, but there's $20 instant savings from CompUSA, and then a $50 Mail in Rebate from Maxtor bringing the final price to $129.99 which isn't bad for a 160GB drive.
It's only good until 4/12/2003 so if you're interested, act soon.

Who the hell cares??? Just as long as I get my stuff cheap! HAHAHAHA
I think one of the main reasons that Maxtor is running all these rebates (WD is too btw) is to compete with WD. Ever since WD first came out with the 8MB cache, Maxtor has been playing catch up. And since WD had them first, they gained the initial market share for 8MB cache drives. Now Maxtor has to try to win some of that market share back.
Also Maxtor has to compete with the fact that WD has a MUCH better warranty than Maxtor, so Maxtor is hoping to make up for lack of warranty with lower prices (for a limited time only of course). But if they were smart, they would just increase their warranty period. Obviously only offering a 1 year warranty while WD offers 3 years, says that Maxtor doesn't have much confidence in the longevity of their products. Thats why I buy WD, even if they are a few bucks more expensive. The extra 2 years safety net is WELL worth it to me!
