I currently use a Alesis HD24 / Tascam DM24 for tracking and mixing,
which is working great.
To expand my editing capabilities, I am thinking about getting a simple
DAW setup.
My transfer options are probably a MOTU 2408 or the Alesis Fireport I
guess. Don't care about 96kHZ so I could get an older 2408 on ebay.
Which DAW software would be best for editing tasks, keeping in mind I
am not tracking to the computer. Would prefer PC platform, as I have a
PC I could use for this.
Functions I would want are
-cut, paste, move, etc (this is on the HD24, but its a little
cumbersome)
-Drum replacement /augmentation
-and finally (I really hate to say this) Autotune
I am am old analog guy (first recording gear purchase a Tascam Porta
One in 1983), so want to keep the computer stuff to a minimum, but if
the take is good except for one snare hit or whatever I would like to
be able to fix it easily.

The Tascam IF/FW-DM firewire card for the DM24 is also an option,
it's 24 busses of I/O Mixer to DAW over firewire for about $350
(actually I think I paid less for mine.) It works great in Nuendo 2.2
for me, but I am on a Mac, not a PC. On a MAC you want OSX 10.3.5 or
later, and a fast machine.

Buying from scratch now I might consider Cubase SX3, where all the
features that would let you use the mixer primarily as a Control
surface for the DAW now work properly. The latest versions of Digital
Performer and Logic are all in the same ballpark feature-wise. (Cubase
works on PC, Logic NO not sure about DP.) Some PC guys here use
Audition.
