I just bought a Yamaha A5000 and am having problems loading the
provided sample discs. Should I be loading volumes, or programs. Do i
save the programs after loading them?

Yahoo groups has a a4000/a5000 group. Volumes are just for
organization sake.
Not sure you can load whole volumes. Certainly you can load programs.
One program
would be something like an instrument. For example a b3 type keyboard.
That program
would include several samples representing the range of the keyboard
frequency wise,
play back settings for those samples such as eq, effects, playback
attack related to key
velocity etc.
