I put a standard cheapo cd-rewriter in a machine the other week and the noise was horrendous.

Which cdrw drives run fairly quietly?
(I am tempted by the LiteOn 52x24x52 RW or LG's 52x24x52 RW)

I would have to say that the liteon drive would probably be better (quieter) drive...

Though you must realise that if you want to perform 52x burns then the disc will be spinning at up to 9000rpm... so no matter how good the drive is its gonna be LOUD.
You can, of course, burn at 40 or 48x... burn times wont be very much slower, but the drive WILL be significantly quieter.

All drives become loudmouth at 40x and higher speed. There should be no real noise difference between 48x and 52x. Noise of 40x is OK. But anything over 32x is not completely quiet. 24x is the ideal speed for noise conscious people

And I agree about LiteOn thing, they are quieter than any other optical drives I've ever seen (at equal speed)

Actually there IS a noticable difference between 48x and 52x...

I have a 48x24x48x thats flash upgradable to 52x.

52x is noticably louder, plus often builds up harmonic resonance thats prominant.
So flashing ones drive from 48x to 52x IMHO is VERY pointless.

note: the noise diff between 40x and 48x is the same as the diff between 48x and 52x.

Using the guides found on the CDrlabs forum.
pretty easy, just need the required bin file and the mtkflash program.

boot to dos, flash the reboot,
then use 52x firmware from then on.
