I installed Win98 on a new 30gb HD as following-

1. Boot using a Win98 startup floppy.
2. Run fdisk and partition HD.
3. Run Win98 setup from CD.

I want to know if the process is the same for installing WinXP on a 80gb HD or is there a better process. Thanks

If the computer has the ability to boot from a CD-ROM, then stick the cd in and let the machine boot up from the CD.

If you can boot from cd, it is the best. If not, boot disks .

Boot into the XP CD, read the screen and follow the instructions. You will be given the chance to partition and format (XP partition only) right in the installer.

Use NTFS and spend some time learning to tweak it. It's well worth the time and effort.

If you want to make more than one partition you can use the disk manager in XP to pratition and format the rest of the drive after the install is completed.

Also note that XP pro is not a "ready to run" OS. It will take some time and a bit of research to get it set up to optimum performance on your system...

It seems the process is more or less the same as Win98. I will try to boot from cd and if not able then will use boot disk. Thanks.

I gather you know how to set your system to boot from a CD... In the Advanced section of your BIOS...

If you need a set of XP bootdisks (don't use the win98 one!) you can get them from http://www.bootdisk.com</A> ... Follow their instructions to the letter, creating working disks is a bit of a finickey process.
