The hard drive have been working cool for about 2 years. Now, one if them has issues. Upon boot up, a message is seen on the screen. It says, "One of your drives is showing an inconsistency". It then runs a scandisk, a bunch of numbers scrolls and then continues to boot. The system continues to Boot into Wondows 2000 with no problems. However, after about 30 seconds, the OS will freeze up and a buzzing/rattling sound is heard. It goes "buzz buzz buzz buzz"(four times) then it pauses for about 5 seconds and then repeats the buzzing. The PC the crashes and reboots.

Can anyone diagnose this problem? The only change that was made was that Norton system works was installed and it did find a few trojan viruses. However, they were cleaned successfully.

Check the disk with the IBM/Hitachi Drive Fitness Test and the Ontrack Data Advisor for errors.

The IBM 75GXP series, commonly known as the "Deathstar" has one of the highest failure rates of any drive in the last five years, and it is certainly one of the worst (if not the worst) hard drive ever produced by IBM. If you managed to get two years out of it, count yourself lucky ... and I hope you have a recent backup of your data.

Perhaps you'd like to take a look at this page.

Damn! I wish I knew about the Class Action suit before I RMA'd my Deathstar last month.

Afro, I had a drive do the exact same thing. 99.9% chance once you run the Drive Fitness Test, it will give you an error code that you'll use to RMA the drive. This can be done fully from Hitachi's web site. They won't send you the new drive until they receive the old one, and they're sticklers for packaging, but you'll get the new drive in a reasonable amount of time.

Hopefully the thing is still under warranty. I think they actually might have extended the warranty period because of the known issues with these drives. Btw, mine lasted a little over 2 years too, and I consider myself one of the lucky ones.
