Hi Guys,

i am working on a limited budget for a home studio set up. picking
monitors is definately the hardest part. so many different opinions.
with the end of my budget i can afford to buy event 20/20bas with the
TC electronics m-one (i could do with another fx unit to go with the
m-3000) or spend it all on a pair of genelec 1030a.
My concerns with the 20/20's are some reliability issues i have read
about here, but €1,350 is also a lot of cash for the genelec.
i am curious to what option people would go for.
thanks as always,
Hugh.

I don't much like the 20/20 OR the Genelec 1030. You sure you don't have
any other options?

I will say that money spent in the monitoring system will always buy you
more than money spent anywhere else in the recording chain. You can't
mix if you can't hear.

with the genes?

The top end is very detailed to the point where it almost feels pitched
up. It's a lot more airy than typical dome tweeter systems, but either
you'll like it or it'll drive you up the wall. I like it for short term
stuff but I don't think I could work on them day in and day out. It is
definitely worth a listen.

If you have a Genelec dealer, you might want to look at the newer 8000-series
Genelecs over the older stuff. They even have a smaller restricted-LF
model that is a huge step up over the awful 1029.

Hey Scott,

unfortunately where i live i can't get demos on anything so i will be
going on recommendations of the good people of this group. the only
other genelec in that price range is the 8030a which looks like a much
smaller speaker (5" cone) and i don't see any reviews for that
particular model. i do appreciate the advice of spending as much as i
can on monitors now, the rest will come later.
cheers,
Hugh.

The new 8000-series monitors are basically too new to see many reviews
on them. I don't think they have even shipped any out to reviewers so
far.

But they are nice monitors. The thing is that monitors are very much
a matter of personal taste, so you absolutely _have_ to listen to them
before buying. There's no way around it. A couple hundred bucks for a
plane ticket to spend an afternoon listening to monitors somewhere else
will save you more than that in the long run by keeping you from buying
monitors that might be good but might not be to your tastes.

Three little words: Take a trip.

This may make your acquisition cost a little higher than someone who
lives in a big city or someone who ignores hands/eyes/ears-on
demonstrations, but the cost of buying the wrong thing based on Usenet
advice or magazine reviews is greater.
