Hey all,
I'm relatively new to strategy games (I've only played Age of
Mythology Gold, Armies of Exigo and Spellforce) and I'm finding Age of
Empires 2 rather difficult on standard setting. Is this game harder
during the capaign mode than others out there? Or amd I an idiot? *g*
Also, while I can ask, how is the difficulty in HOMM 3? I played it
when it first came out but only played the maps, not the campaign and
gave up because I just couldn't win no matter what. I recently bought
the budget copy with all the add-ons so I'm hoping the campaign mode
will be easier.

Didn't seem that hard to me. You probably need a bit of multiplayer
training to get the game automatisms "well enough". Nothing clever and you
certainly aren't an idiot but in the scenarii where you produce (I vaguely
remember some Barbarossa ones) multiplayer style helps _a lot_. Rush and
kill one faction while eventually barricading the others, then leisurely
overhelm the remaining opposition. In some Joan of Arc scenarii, knowing
how the AI will react to your move and preserving your forces carefully is
the key. Don't remember much more, but that was long ago.

My usual tactic (in all these games) is to build another
town/people-generator as soon as possible. Then food is the big
concern. Once enough food & therefore people can be generated
it's "easy" to start collecting the serious resources needed to
fend off the enemy and expand.
Also I use the pause key a *lot* in this kind of game while I'm
generating units/checking the map/etc. It's cheating, and no use
for multiplayer, but I only ever play offline anyway.

Heh, my strategy so far is turtling - I dig in and build away until I
can take over the map. I'll check out multiplayer strategies at
heavengames and give that a shot. Maybe I'll learn different
strategies

I'm in the Cleansing of the Loire and one guys army is huge! I did
just take out one castle although I find battering rams as resiliant
as paper. I've just discovered that villagers can repair them though
heh. And somehow I missed the pause key. D'uh...
I'll just have to try different things and hopefully I'll catch on.
