I want to be able to take a hard disk based recorder to a bar, my living
room, a church, plug in two mics and end up with a decent recording. I
don't want 4 or eight tracks sound on sound editing capabilities. Just a
stereo recorder that any moron can plug in and use.

You won't get HD without the editing facilities and multiple tracks, but
you don't *have* to use them just because they are there. There are
plenty of entry level machines that will only record two tracks at a time.

If you really only want stereo recording and playback, a minidisc
recorder will do what you want, and produce a suprisingly decent
recording - in a live situation like that the recording quality will be
dictated by your choice of mics and where you put them. You'll also
need an external preamp with phantom power if you choose mics that need
it, or get a recorder like the Marantz PMD650 which has all that built
in at a price.

Marantz PMD670. Uses Compact Flaah or microdrives
(microdrives satisfy your HD-based requirement). Runs on
optional rechargeable batteries or AC adapter. Plug in two
mics - dynamic or condenser, it does 48v phantom. Record
whatever is going on in the church located in your living
room which is a bar.

It doesn't get any easier.

Moron not included.

would you like to suggest some mics? I am generally recording acoustic
vocal music with 2-3 players.

Think Willie and Waylon and Kris.

I won't ask what your budget range is because you disqualified just
about everything with your last sentence. Honestly, I know of no
portable hard disk recorder that a moron can use. They all require a
few operations through a menu in order to get started, and, because
they have the display, the buttons, and the computing power, they all
seem to include some form of editing whether you want it or not.

The Nomad Jukebox 3 is as simple as any of them, but you'll have to
buy one second-hand or a factory refurbished unit since they're no
longer being made. If you'll settle for a flash memory card rather
than a hard disk, the Edirol R1 might do the job for you, but I
haven't done a turn-on-and-record exercise with one to see how
idiot-proof that operation can be. I think you can set defaults on the
Sound Devices recorders so that it comes up ready to go, but unless
you're willing to spend over $1,000, you needn't be concerned with
that option.

Well, I hate starting out with "it depends" but...it
depends.

I can only tell you what has worked very well for me. I have
a Crown SASS and a Shure VP88 that have done exceptionally
well. If you're doing single-point stereo, either of those,
or any of the several other stereo mics will be quite
useful. Audio Technica makes a couple, Studio Projects LD-2
is quite attractive.

If you aren't convinced a single-point solution is the right
one for you, a pair of Sound Room matched Oktava MC012
wouldn't be bad. I haven't used mine with the 670 yet, but
if you get those specific mics, be sure to get the whole set
with all six capsules to give yourself some flexibility.

A nice, budget-priced spaced omni pair might be the
Behringer ECM8000. Hard to beat for the price, and if omni
is what will work for you, there you go.

And there many dynamic mics that would be good choices. A
couple of E-V 635s would make a nice dynamic omni pair. And
don't rule out 57s and 58s. They might be perfect for what
you want to do. Splurge and get a couple of E-V RE20s. Or a
couple Sennheiser 421s.

In reality, there are just too many variable to really
recommend anything other than just a handful of
possibilities. Try a couple of inexpensive options, and go
up from there.
