Hi, I have a Cisco Linksys EA4500 router that I would like to be able to connect to the LAN network in my building. The router is currently providing internet over wifi, but I'm not able to access the LAN network.
I'm using DC++ to connect to a hub in our building, and this works fine if I directly connect my computer to the wall - I can get internet and LAN access. I can also see the other computers in the 'network' section of 'computer' in windows.
I can't see any of the other computers in the 'network' section if I use my router (only devices connected to my router).
I would like to be able to be able to connect to the internet and the LAN network over my wireless, how can this be done?
You're probably connecting your router to the other network over its WAN port. But that creates a NEW ethernet network of your own. And by doing so, it prevents network discovery, which is usually confined to the same ethernet network. So you can probably connect to those devices by using their explicit IP address, but you can't address them by name, or see them in Network Places or similar discovery results.
The correct thing to do is to configure your router as a simple AP by connecting it to the other network over one of its LAN ports. Also, disable your router's DHCP server, and assign it a static IP address in the other network.
You can use any IP address you like as long as it’s part of the same network, unique, and not being managed as part of the router's DHCP pool. For example, if you're using the 192.168.1.x network, and your router is 192.168.1.1, and using a DHCP pool of 192.168.1.100-199, then perhaps make the second router 192.168.1.2.
And yes, it and any other devices attached to it will be able to access the internet. You're just demoting the router to a simple wireless AP. IOW, it no longer routes, it just switches (wired and wireless).
I have to connect to my internet via PPPoE (user name and Password), does this affect anything? I tried looking at my routers "connection types" and I don't see AP, instead there are PPPoE, Static IP, Automatic configuration, PPTP, L2TP, Bridge Mode.
