Fastest Hard drive available?

I know you get these all the time. But you have to admit technology changes all the time so what was said 2 months ago isn't gonna be the same as today.

I need a really fast hard drive and pretty large one as well. I was looking at the 80GB Western Digital and the Maxtor one. Only difference i can see is that WD has a 3year warranty. But, i'm also looking for the fastest drive available. i can't affors SCSI lol so IDE only ... What do you think of the IBM 180GXP?

thanks!

Differences in drive performance, these days, are fairly minimal. Any ATA100 or ATA133 drive is going to give you decent performance. The differences would be apparent only in bechmarks. It's unlikely you'd notice much difference in day to day use.

Quality wise:
Stick with the Western Digital or Maxtor.
Both are going to last longer and run quieter than the IBM.

i don't do day to day stuff ... i do video editing and i need a really fast hard drive and a pretty big one. I can't afford scsi. Just the little bit would make a difference to me.

What do you think of the IBM drives. The 60GXP were very fast. faster then my maxtor. But they were defective. What are the IBM 180GXP's like?

No problem.

If you really need drive speed, you should probably invest in a RAID card for your machine and run dual drives in striping mode. It's not twice as fast, but it is definately a lot faster.

oh my motherboard has onboard RAID. I can hook up Two Raid arrays actually. Because this raid has 4 IDE ports. It's the ABit IT7

That was my plan, so i bought 2 80GB drives w/ 8MB cache. I'm Going to use my spare and put that in my external enclosure kit. Has firewire connection and it's pretty fast.

Nobody trusts IBM anymore. The 75gxp and 60gxp were garbage. Stick to Maxtor or Western Digital.

I have the WD1200JB. I personally recommend the WD JB drives.

cool - just bought 2x WD 80GB special edition drives to put in RAID.
