Hi guys

I purchased a 120 GB unit (Western Digital) in December 2002 which suddenly is making a high frequency noise even when the unit is idle. I would like to know if this noise is indicative of a serious problem with my unit, because I'm concerned about my sensible data. Should I have to return the unit? or is it nothing to worry about?. Thanks in advance

I don't know if this applies to you specific case, but when a HD makes a lot of noise it can be an indication of a bad sector, or a possible crash. What i would do is call up Western Digital and get their opinion. I hope this helped!

A high pitched whine is a sign that the drive bearings are slowly failing. It will probably get progressivly worse over weeks and months.

I dont THINK your data is in any immediate risk... But it IS your data, so I would still back it up ASAP and get the drive replaced under warantee. Better safe than sorry.
Besides, the quicker you get it replaced the less you have to listen to the annoying whine.
