I just read a preview of Civ 4 on an google-cached ign page.

Anyways, I'm glad they are tweaking culture. I thought there was some
major rooms for improvement in civ3. I don't know if it will be any
better, but at least they are working on it.

One thing which I see as a potential pain-in-the-butt feature is the
introduction of religion.

I also don't like the direction they are taking combat. They will now
have an overall power rating instead of a offense/defense rating.

I also don't like how terrorism isn't an option in espionage. It's
sort of disappointing that they didn't add this in.

I like how they now let you spend on culture, just as you do research.
And, I like how more open the tech tree will be, not trying to
compartamentalize things into periods. I also like how ivory (I think)
will now help build wonders.

One thing I wish, is that cities within 2 squares away from the coast
should be considered a coastal city. Basically, if the city 'owns' a
coastal/sea square, it should be considered a coastal city.

Ofcourse, there are alot of things I wish for....

Anyways, I'm wondering what your thoughts are on civ4 that's now being
developed.

What are they doing with it?

Hmm. I wonder why they would do it? Everyone is used to a pair of ratings.

What effect did you want? There has always been sabotage, for example.

One of the things I liked about older Civs (and freeciv) was the lack of time
periods.

I'd rather see something that you could build on a coastal square to allow
shipbuilding/launching.

Also, isn't there a list of things that happened in going from Civ2 to Civ3
that folks have wanted reversed?

I'd also like some industrial tech or other let me build roads/bridges across
shallow water -- there was a Civ1 or Civ2 bug that allowed a variant of this.

I'd much rather they work on something in the vein of Alpha Centauri.

Civ is feeling oh-so-derivative these days.

For that matter, what I'd really like to see is Emperor of the Fading
Suns... done right. That game had a lot of thematic promise; alas it
faired poorly in execution.

Speaking of Emperor of the Fading Suns, have you tried any of the
after-market mods? Hyperion or Nova? True, the game still lacks as
single player, but it's better!
