HD problem after defrag

Hi there!

Hope someone out there can help me out.

I have a Seagate 8GB HD model ST38410A. Recently while defragmenting it the system hung. After rebooting the PC, it wouldn’t recognize the HD anymore (Autodetect failed to recognize it). I’d noticed that as soon as I switch on the power, the HD’s LED is lit all the time, even before the BIOS kicks in. The HD never spins at all (no spinning/clicking sound coming from it like it used to) after that. I’d even tried to manually enter the BIOS data but to no avail. I’d tried it on another PC and different setting and IDE cable but still the same.

FYI, PC spec is Fujitsu Deskpower2000 - P3 with 128 MB RAM, HD on IDE 0 master, CDROM on IDE 1 master, Win98SE

Any idea what's going on?

Someone told me that I might still be able to recover the data by replacing the circuit board. You think it'll work?

A bit of a long shot I would say but may be worth a try. Try turning it upside down and then try it. I have even heard placing it in the freezer in a sealed bag will shrink the bearings enough to allow it to run, other than that the manufacturers can do it for you at a very high cost.

yeah... Its sounds like it died at the end of your defrag. Possibly the defrag load pushed it over the edge.

A new circuit board could help, but its a pretty long shot, plus you have to be damn good with electronics to do.
Even if it does work the problem could still lie elsewhere.

sorry mate. its gone.

 The good news is that you now have a perfectly good reason to upgrade your hard disk.

It's dead.

You'll hear it time and time again, but once more won't hurt anybody: backup.

Spindle of 25 80min Ritek CDs for £5 - total storage: 17,500mb (17.09gb)
Lite-On 48/24/48 CD writer - £38.50
10 years of hard-work: Priceless!

People don't seem to realise that 2 hours backing up their data is far quicker than redoing all the work!

I once had this problem while using my comp normally and suddenly, there are clicking noises, sounds almost as though it was quick repitions of shutting down.

Then, unfortuantely for my case, blue screen of death appeared. Following, I'm not able to read HDD or whatsoever, as mentioned above.

This happened to me when I tried reformatting my PC...although it worked perfectly fine before, which I reckon is weird...

My Solution.

1st time it screwd up...

I brought in the car to a repair store...CPU toppled and hit the side of the car door when my mum was driving :p. When I went to the store, it booted up fine.

2nd time it screwd up...

I got a bit pissed so I juz kicked it hard...and I mean hard :p. And it read my HDD after...WEIRD.

If the data is THAT important you can take your drive to a professional data recovery company... but it costs big $$$ and there is no guarantee you will get all your data back.

Now can someone explain how we ever got the idea that baby bunnies lay multicolored eggs made of chocolate in our living rooms?"
