I just bought a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus with 8mb cache and I was wondering how to set it up on my computer. I do not have a Raid motherboard so all I have is two IDE channels. I already have an IBM 120GXP on one of the channels. My question is should it be on the same channel or should it be on the secondary channel?

P.S. I should have asked this before I bought it, but which company's 8mb drives are better, WD or Maxtor?

If the secondary channel is not occupied, then I suggest you put your new HD there. Otherwise, connect it to the same channel as the IBM HD.

I can't tell you which 8MB drive is better as both WD and Maxtor are equally good in terms of performance. But the WD has a better warranty policy than that of Maxtor.

It really depends on what other drives you have hooked up.

If you ONLY have 2 hard drives, then its best with each one on its own cable.
If you have optical drives then it may be an idea to keep the opticals and HDD's seperated. Occasionally peple have compatibility problems with an optical and HDD on the same cable.

Regarding the 8Mb cache drives, both have very similar performances, too close for the casual user to tell.
I prefer and reccomend the W.D. drive however as it comes with a 3 year warantee.

I'm having doubts about my new hard drive. My IBM 120gxp is quieter and I really don't see any performance increases with the extra cache. Maybe I should paid for the WD instead of saving the $20.
