I only ask here because I respect the views of the people who are regulars
here. The latest news about an upgrade to City of Heroes crossed my view
and I (again) thought "gee this looks interesting. I might like it". Since
Im only beta-testing one game and getting tired of waiting for another to
start beta-test....
Is CoH still viable and worth buying?
Are the servers adequate?
Are there any PKiller or Griefer concerns?
And, are there a few really really almost mandatory "be sure to do this" on
intial character creations? I really plan to try and play it without
newbie-begging and probably go solo for awhile.
Im thinking scrapper, natural or mutation, super reflexes and spines.

Very much so.

Yes. No serious lag issues.

No. Pkilling is strictly controlled and voluntary (ie arenas)

Not really. There a number of informative player built guides to both
archtypes and power sets on the CoH forums though.

If you know anyone who has pre-ordered COV, it comes w/free trials for
COH. Also, I got an email w/a free trial to give away as a holiday
promotion just yesterday or the day before. Already gave mine out, but
if you know someone who has an active COH account, ask them to check
their email, they might have a free trial they can give ya, then ya can
check it out for free. =>

I was doing SWG for awhile. Then let it lapse. Havent kicked it back up.
Im worse than that though. I found out there were like 300 free servers for
Ultima Online now and I got back into that. Its a MUCH better game with far
fewer players in it. The wilderness is actually wilderness and you can
build a house anyplace you want.

Yes and yes.

Yes. Zero lag last time I played a few months ago.
> Are there any PKiller or Griefer concerns?
No. You can play the game without any PVP at all. I believe that they have
just added some PvP but it's optional.

No, you don't have to follow a strict "recipe" for a good character. Just
making your own choices you'll find a viable character. However, if you're
planning on soloing, you should be aware that certain kinds of characters
are better at it than others. I'd recommend a Scrapper if you want to solo
most of the time.
> Im thinking scrapper, natural or mutation, super reflexes and spines.
Should work.
I am thinking about getting into CoH again after COV launches.

Definitely! As grindy as CoH got for me, those guys have plenty of credit
in the fun department. Hell, I'd buy "City of Super Pets"!

Can you tell me more about playing UO for free? Where can I get the client? What
servers do you recommend? And other things I might need to now.

I LIKE the idea! Write them and recommend it. That would be a WAY cool
upgrade.

The same old software works. There is a login.cfg that you make a copy of
then edit the login.cfg to point to one of the free servers.
If you dont have the software you can download it from EA site. Pretty
cool of them to keep offering download of the client with no play codes
for their servers. Im sure they must now that many of the downloads arent
playing at their site.
> What servers do you recommend?
Hmmmm that doesnt tend to work. Im an old man and looking for a virtual
retirement home. The one I play on is adult run, quiet, frowny on PvP
stuff, language contolled, and full of crafter types. There is a HUGE
range of servers out there. Straight UO, or heavily modified, pro-PvP,
mandatory RPG, super easy with starter boost kits, or super hard for
long-term play.
If you go here you can get a "front-end loader" which makes it easy to
shop around. It shows you a list of servers and when you select one it
edits the login.cfg then loads the game.
http://www.uogateway.com/
And here are some sites that provide other lists of servers.
Just dont be discouraged. No matter how extreme one of the sites are,
that is NOT what all of the sites are. Keep looking around.
I take it for granted that you have played UO before?
Im presently playing Shazzys Shard.

Hey my wife loves me playing Ultima Online.
I get to pack-rat, try my hand at making things, visit other peoples
junk sales, kill & skin animals... all the things she hates me doing in
our garage.

I'm on the verge of dropping WoW to go back to CoH.
> Are the servers adequate?
More so for CoH than for WoW (probably the main reason why I'm
thinking of switching back).
> Are there any PKiller or Griefer concerns?
No PvP outside the arena so no worry about PKs, but there are
probably sociopaths in every environment. Fortunately in CoH
the worst it usually amounts to is when somebody jumps in and
smacks the bad guys you were trying to kill.

There are min/max superanalytical kill-joys who will try to
tell you that you can't possibly have fun unless you play the
same uber optimized build they do. But there are also people
who point out that different skill picks just mean different
"challenges".
Just play the damn game. Don't let us tell you how to have
fun.

It should be taken note of that with the current round of I5 changes
to all ATs that CoH is very different from what it was.

True. My 38 Ill/Emp troller now seems less like a ringmaster
of a circus and more like a controller. I have endurance
left over to throw holds and heals and stuff. I haven't
had the guts to try the new blaster "defiance" buff yet.
I read somewhere about how this means that blasters might
want to tell their healers not to heal them right away when
they get chewed up, and my thought was "well, isn't that
*special*"...

You haven't been annoyed with the reduced hold times and increased
recharge time on the holds?

I don't have any blasters so I have no idea how well that idea would work.
