So I'm having this weird problem with Windows 7 and it only started to happen recently. Completely random desktop shortcuts. . . will stop working. The target to the specific programs they go to are deleted and I'm left with a dead shortcut. This has become frustrating. I haven't done anything new lately except install the game Spore. I've run spyware and antivirus and nothing has come up. Any ideas?

Welcome t_brush! Just to be clear, you're saying that your programs suddenly disappear, thus not accessible through your desktop?

Check first if the programs in question are actually gone. Look in your Program Files folder.

Next, you might want to boot from a CD and run anti-virus/anti-malware from there, just so you can be sure everything's really clean. You will of course build the boot CD on another computer.

Hope these suggestions help!

No, I'm saying that the programs are there, but the shortcuts to run those programs that are on my desktop do not actually execute the program, they do nothing. Each shortcut has a target or destination which refers back to the program folder to the executable file. Thats the information that is gone. So thus, they point to nowhere.
