Forum Home Audio : Pro Audio Transformers from old modems

Probably a dumb question, but I have several modems laying around that are
going to go into the garbage.
They have Atech ATS-117 transformers and Midcom 671-9372 transformers on
them.
Are these worth de-soldering and holding onto? Can they be used for any
audio projects, direct boxes, mic preamps etc?

Sure, they are lo-fi audio isolation transformers. Use two of them to
connect the headphone out of your TV to your stereo.

YES!

I did exactly that.

In a 600 Ohm circuit, they probably have a limited lo fi frequency
response. BUT....

when driven from a low Z like 60 Ohms or less, the bass and high end
response will improve. The perfromance of a transformer depends on
it's design AND the circuit it is in.

You can design a DI around it so that it is in a low Z source or load
and it may work very well. Try it. If you don't want them, send them
to me :-)

Shielding may be an issue. If you use them in a low level (mic)
application, they will be suseptable to magnetic hum pickup.

The ones I've seen were very skimpy on iron. Anorexic even.
I'd be pleasantly suprised if they had any bandpass beyond the
traditional telephone range (roughly 300Hz to 3KHz)

Might be good for talkback, intercom, "telephone sound" filtering,
etc, but I would not expect anything out of them resembling even
minimally decent freq response.

They are almost certainly 600:600 ohm transformers, possibly with a center
tap on some of the windings.

Give them a try... I think they are too low ratio for direct boxes, and I
bet they have no low end whatsoever, but they're worth grabbing.
