I already have a Sprint Sierra Wireless Card and I'm considering the
Audiovox 6601 PDA Phone. Can the phone be used for voice at the same time
it carries a Sprint Wireles Internet connection? Even if it can, does
Sprint offer a unlimited Wireless Internet plan for the phone or would I
have to do it on the sly?

No, voice and data can *not* be used simultaneously. Short answer: it's
the same channel either way, and only one ride at a time. It's more
complex, but that's the end result. For now.
The PPC6601 gets treated as a phone, so you sign up for a voice minutes
package, and then, because it's PocketPC, you would pay $30/month extra
for unlimited usage of the Vision service via the PPC interface.

Thank you, RØb!
Will that $30/mo also provide the ability to use the 6601, perhaps via
BlueTooth, as a wireless Internet access modem for a laptop?
Thx again!

Technically, no. No unlimited use pack that comes with phone covers use
of the phones as if they were modems for laptops or PC's.
However, if you minimize that kind of usage, it was being sort of
"overlooked" while I worked there. You'd have to download all the
Debian iso's, or something huge like that, in order to get the attention
of those in charge of watching over this.

I thought I saw this week (2/7/2005) that Sprint would allow Bluetooth only
cellphones to be used as modems. I didn't see a limit on the amount of
downloaded data, which led me to believe the throughput would be so slow
relative to one of the Connection Cards, that you wouldn't tolerate large
downloads.
I think I heard at a developers meeting that GSM transfers over cellphones
averaged about 9600 baud, i.e. self limiting.

The pricing I found for HAM (Handset as Modem):
Must have an approved Sprint PCS Vision handset with the modem-attachable
option and a primary Sprint PCS Vision voice plan.
Pricing for this in 20, 50 and 300MB chunks; $40, $55, $80.

great device but you cant talk and hold a data connection at the same
time. cell networks don't support it yet

I don't see a 6601 on Sprint PCS' web site. The PPC-6600 is there.
Yes all Sprint PCS' Vision plans for phones are unlimited. Because it
is a pocket pc, it does cost more, $30 instead of $15.

CDMA networks don't, but GSM networks do support simultaneous
voice and data connections on the same phone.

I may disagree with you John. I don't know all the ins and outs of the
protocols built into the phone, but in saying that, while up in NYC for the
holidays, I was downloading email while tethered to my laptop, and my phone
started ringing. I answered it, finished the call and email was still
downloading.
Yea, I know that this thread started out on a data card, but you then you
generalized it by saying CDMA ... .
