the plan for number porting?

hi all,

preparing for a number port from AT&T to sprintpcs, however wanted to make
sure i had my plan figured out.

i should anticipate number port to take about 30 days, therefore i'm going
to notify SPRINT of my request at the beginning of my at&t's account billing
cycle. and my only communication is with sprint, correct? i don't need to
tell at&t of this? thus i won't hear all the great retention plans they want
to offer me?

I recently ported my number from AT&T to Sprint, it took all of maybe
3 hours tops. You don't have to tell AT&T anything, just visit your
Sprint dealer and he'll take care of the paperwork. If you are still
under a contract with AT&T they'll hit you with an early termination
fee so be sure you know the status of your AT&T account first. I'd
also make the switch shortly BEFORE your AT&T account cycle ends to
avoid any charges on the next cycle.

i had not heard that number porting takes 30 days but yes, you would only
speak with Sprint who will most likely make you sign something (being the
account owner) that they will send to AT&T.

From what I heard (and experienced) Nextel is the worst with the number
porting process. They add a special password to the account so it can't be
ported without you notifying them and they don't tell you the password is on
there. That took me about a week or two to complete. When I transferred from
Sprint to Nextel it took about six hours.

Make sure you inform Sprint of the password on your AT&T account.

I didn't with my Verizon account. Verizon told the Sprint porting center that
it was scheduled to take four hours to complete the port of my Verizon number,
but they can't release the number without the account password if one is set on
the account. Since I hadn't given Sprint the info, I had to wait an extra day
before the porting was complete.

Plan for inconvenience. AT&T has been using a different porting
authority from the other wireless companies, and it has cuased problems
as a result. MAYBE this has changed with the Cingular merger, but
considering the two systems still operate as separate but "friendly"
entities, I doubt this has really changed.

Correct, you need only tell Sprint. And it should in any case take far
less than 30 days.

Wait until your contract is completely done to avoid Early Termination
Fee!! Unless there is some sort of "automatic renewal" thing that you
signed, there is only good and no bad to waiting for the contract to be
fully adhered to.

You will be month-to-month at that point and you simply call Sales at
Sprint to port your #. They will ship a "hot" phone with your number
ported within about 1-3 days via UPS. It will not take anywhere near 30
days.

In fact, if you should happen to need to talk to AT&T, and tell them you
*are* porting out, they are legally forbidden from trying to sell you
into staying. $1500 fine PER OCCURRENCE if you complain to the FCC
after they try.

Yes. My Sprint dealer asked me for that in advance. This was around
1pm and he said the porting process might be finished by 6pm or maybe
as late as the next morning but it was up and running by 4pm which was
nice.

Well, it all depends on what has happened, really. If someone has moved
to an area where coverage from carrier A is lousy or nonexistent, and
they would like to port to carrier B with excellent coverage in the new
region, then no matter how you slice it, paying the ETF is worth it even
if you can't get it waived or reduced. There's zero value in paying for
zero service.

Paying the ETF would also make sense if carrier B has a needed service
or add-on that carrier A doesn't have, and paying the ETF end up cheaper
than riding out your contract.

I would actually kind of hope that they would send a phone that isn't
activated. Shipping a hot ported phone means that for 1 to 3 days, your
old phone is useless, and your ported phone hasn't arrived yet.
