Well I did it. Ordered two Seagate Cuda 80 Gig SATA drives, just because I have a thing for SATA. I plan on running them in RAID 0 on my i875 MB (when one is actually available for me to buy.)

i875 has the ICH5R Northbridge with integrated SATA and RAID 0/1 built in. Does anyone have any idea what the procedure will be for formatting and setting these badboys up? They'll be the only two hard drives in the system when I'm finished.

How does it normally work when setting up a RAID 0 and a clean install in a new system? Is it a pain? What will I need?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Another SATA fanboy
I've been trying to get hold of a 200 gig drive for ages with no joy, so I'm about to try this instead with a couple of 120's. And if THAT doesn't keep me in disk space for a while, I give up!!

Sorry I missed your response. Yes, my name is Twitch and I'm a SATA fanboy.

ANYway, I just got my Gigabyte 8KNXP-non Ultra with ICH5R...I won't have the processor for another week or so, but I'll let you know how it is when I get everything set up. :)

Hope yours is as straightforward as mine - just finished over the weekend, A7N8X onboard Raid0 with 2 Barracuda 160's, almost the simplest installation I've ever done!

And I know the Barracuda isn't supposed to be the fastest, but in this configuration it ain't bad at all, AND v.quiet. And available... unlike the Diamondmax Plus9 I've been after for weeks.

Hehe. Ordered the processor today so when it gets here, I'm gonne be an upgrading fool. I've been doing some research into how to set up SATA RAID with a clean install of Windows XP. It looks pretty straightforward, but you never know until you do it. The biggest problem I had was figuring out how to extract the Intel SATA RAID drivers from Gigabyte's setup CD, since they seem to assume you are going to run a conventional single boot-disk with RAID for storage.

I might be making it too difficult, since with the ICH5R, you supposedly can get everything working on a single disk, and then migrate that single disk onto a second disk and convert it to a RAID 0, but I decided to do it this way.

Anyway, if nothing else, once I figure it out, we'll be the SATA RAID experts for a little while.
