Quick question here.

1. I just want to make sure: the Realtek ALC650 using by SoundStorm is a 16bit/48k DAC or 16bit/44.1k DAC?

2. I believe PlayStation2 supports 5.1 Dolby Digital audio encoding but why do I have to turn on the "Pro Logic" (which I believe is the emulation of discrete channels output from single input) mode on my Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 to get 5.1ch sound? (if I turn that off I'm not getting any audio output from my Rear speaker, but Front, Center and Sub work well. And I connect my PS2 to my speaker via optical if that matters)

1. It's a codec chip (the combination of a DAC and an ADC plus other things). It can output at 20-bit (20-bit DAC) and record at 18-bit (18-bit ADC). See Realtek's website for more info here:

I didn't find clock/sampling rate info but it should be 48KHz (IIRC all AC97 chips should have an internal clock of 48KHz). Because DVDs are generally at 48KHz (or 96KHz). Anyway, I guess the nForce APU (sound processor) isn't capable of more than 16-bit/48KHz resolution (or else you would have heard nVidia hyping their e.g. 20-bit resolution all over their documentation).

2. No, it's NOT capable of DD 5.1 'encoding'. Only nForce (and as such XBox) can do this (via digital output of course). It MAY be able to 'decode' Dolby Digital streams for an analog connection to a 5.1 speaker or multi-channel receiver (for DVD playback) but from the look of it (what you're saying about needing to enable Pro Logic to output all channels) it may not even be capable of that.
