anyone ever bought one of the gsm phones that sprint has listed in the
internation roaming section on the site? curious if you could just buy a
similar one off of ebay and use through sprint.

I think you can get things a LOT cheaper on e-bay.
I purchased an Asian (2 band) GSM phone in Thailand for $35.00. (at
MBK center).
The only downside is that you probably will have to use a local SIM
card which won't allow you to forward your home number to your phone.
For me that was a plus actually ... cheaper local calls.
But .... for the savings it might be something worth considering.
