More DVD players and drives support DVD-R/W than DVD+R/W, but DVD+R/W is catching up. You may get a DVD burner that supports both format if you're worry about the compatiblity issue.

It would be easier to advise you, If you revealed what you're intending to burn? IE; backup data, make home movies, copy DVDs to play on home theatre system?

Anyway I'd go for a burner that covered all formats, then the only decision you've got to make from there, is which burning media to use for what purpose.
