I think I'm a convert to digital download. After a marathon struggle with
my modem BiI arrived intact and I got a chance to play it last night. It
took about 18 hours, but there are no large adds or extraneous things in the
file to slow it down, that's just my line-speed talking, and it left me
plenty of time to draw analogies to the historical campaign. While the long
wait is obviously still a lot shorter than waiting to get to a shop, or
ordering it by post, somehow the psychology of not knowing if the file will
arrive corrupted, or of seeing the thing tick down to finished, feels almost
as if I was standing in a queue that whole time, so at times it felt longer.
Odd. Still, with a better connection speed that'll be less of a prob. and
the thing worked, so I'm a happy camper.

Aha, went over to the Dark Side finally you did :)

I'm a bit in a hurry so I'm lumping everything together here :

After reading your AAR I thought you would be a nice victim ^H^H^H I
mean candidate for the following tournament :

"Matrix Games (www.matrixgames.com) and Strategic Studies Group
(www.ssg.com.au) are pleased to announce the first sponsored tournament
for the new release Battles In Italy. All gamers are invited to
compete for prizes totaling $200 in free games!

Sign up for the tournament at the Run5 site (www.ssg.com.au) and
reserve your spot! The tournament will be played through a series of
e-mail games and coordinated by Run5 volunteers. Prizes will be
awarded as follows, based on final standings:

1st Place: $100 Gift Certificate
2nd Place: $50 Gift Certificate
3rd Place: $30 Gift Certificate
4th Place: $20 Gift Certificate

All gift certificates will be redeemable in the Matrix Games Online
Store for the winners' choice of available games. Of course, along
with the gift certificates will come bragging rights for the champions
and no doubt a series of new challengers!"

Regarding the bugs : They might release a patch very quickly as I
gather from the forum there are some nasty bugs.

Greetz,

Eddy Sterckx

Hi Mike,

I've been a Matrix games DD convert for some time now.

Last thing I bought was Tin Soldiers Julius Caesar [which I can
thoroughly recommend as an excellent game btw]

The satisfaction of having a game on your HD within the hour (that's DSL
for you) and not worrying about shipping and bad CD's generally makes
purchasing decisions a lot easier.

As others have pointed out, there is no stupid CD protection so games run
instantly from your HD - nice feature; you just have to make sure you
backup your download and write the serial number on the CD to prepare
yourself for the inevitable reformat/reinstall Windoze sequence every 12
months or so. You may wish to consider a similar system for you new game
[congrats and good on ya, btw], it generally has the approval of many
here.

I have noticed that Matrix are also very snappy with updating patches
into the download product and they are to be commended on that - makes
the end user who is less familiar with applying patches not have to worry
about such technicalities.

As an aside your name is familiar. Did we meet in an Adelaide ASL
tournament back in the late 80's? Where does time go :-)

Cheers Chris

Mike is new here, so doesn't know about your "Pet Peeve #637" :)

@Mike : Briarroot considers the phraze "Digital Download" a redundancy,
as all downloads are digital. To cut down on electrons and preserve our
precious rain forest his mission in life is to stamp out the usage of
said phraze. Sadly his campaign so far has resulted in a lot of
innocent electrons getting killed because people keep replying with
useless drivel. And I can prove this last statement :)

Yes indeed. My ISP kicks me offline every 2 hours so GetRight and its ilk,
Fresh Download is the one I'm using at the moment, are lifesavers.

Art imitates life: I had exactly the same discussion here yesterday, where
I argued DD should just be D. I blame my use of the expression on peer to
peer group pressure. (Boom boom).

Thank you. I am indeed, have spent a lot of this week playing around with
ways to use it. I have the zeal of the convert now you see.

An update seems to have happened already, for which I'm grateul. I've been
hammering the Wehrmacht for a few days now, time for a change. There are a
couple of new scenarios too, but I'll finish the first lot off before I have
a look at them.

Now there's a blast from the past!! Yes ... it wasn't that long ago though,
must have been 94 or 95 I think, I forget which. 10 years, man ... You
whipped my sorry backside real good at some street crossing ... Stalingrad
maybe, the memory's a bit dim, I just remember my killer stacks disappearing
one after another. That was a good day. Moved to Sydney just after that so
I never got play again down there. Just met up with another ASLer up here
in Cowra though, so I'll have to dust the counters off again, I've lapsed in
the last few years. Good to see there are still a few off us around!

HA HA!! Only 24 hours and 25 minutes more download time at 26400 bps,
and I will have Tin Soldiers Julius Caesar!

Reading this thread finally convinced me to try the loooooooong
download. I use GetRight. If you can do it even though your ISP kicks
you off every 2 hours<!> then who am I to complain (my ISP doesn't
have any time limit). :-)

I also felt better when I discovered their generous 30 day period for
downloading the software. I didn't know what to expect, and feared it
would be a 1 day limit or something.
