Curious to know if there are any reputable places from which to rent
mics and mic pre's in the L.A. area - (preferably San Fernando Valley
or Burbank area).

As far as general idea of what i'm looking for :

Mics
------

Small diaphragm pencil-condensers (in the nuemann km184 - oktava mc012
range)

plus :

Sennheiser MD421

Mic pre's
----------
API or similar
Racked Neve or clones
or even lower budget substitutes - sytek, peavey vmp, rnp, etc..

I found one or two in the area - but have seen things to the effect of
having to have a license of some sort to rent. I'm just a home-studio
joe, off-the-street, so i'm looking for a place that will rent to
regular citizens such as myself.

all recommendations welcome.

Try AEA in Pasadena or Audio Affects in Burbank (if they're still around.)

You want Gearworks Pro Audio. 818-753-0083. They are in Studio City near
Universal Studios. Just off Lankershim, near the Mini dealership. Tell
them Kendall sent you. Great gear, great service, excellent tech staff.
They definitely rent to "small" outfits, and can drop the gear off and pick
up, as well.

Audio Affects went under and there was a big auction a few months back for
their stuff...

Hollywood Sound and Audio Rents have a pretty huge inventory, Location Sound
has some good stuff, Advanced Audio, Design FX are other companies I've
used.

If you're going to rent, though, why don't you get something better than an
Octava? You probably won't find any of those for rent as they are so cheap
to buy. You can rent SD solid state mics for probably $15-20/day, perhaps
$25 for Schoeps/sennheiser MKH, and $60-$80 for SD tube mics.

Benjamin named the best candidates with a good supply of mics and
pres.

You don't need a license to rent anything from these places. They
just need to know they are going to get paid, and you're not going to
steal their gear.

Most established renters have an account and get a bill in the mail.
You should not have a problem if you have a credit card.
