if nothing happens at all you either have a problem with your external hard disk or with the new laptop. try the external drive in a different computer and verify it works and your data is on it.

You may also want to check your BIOS to see if whatever connection you are using for your external is enabled. You can also do it through Device Manager. There may also be an issue with having XP and 7 system files without the proper partitioning for a dual boot system. Since they are on two separate disks, I'm not sure why it would be a problem.....just a possibility.
