I also have the i500 and I remember seeing some place that it cannot be done
but it can be done through the Internet. I think of you sign up for the
business connection personal and download the software to install on the
desktop and phone it can be done. Business connection personal is the same
price as the vision plan, only $10 per month so I think it's worth it. On
first try I couldn't get it to work properly but will be trying it again
soon because I think the issues I had were with my mail server, not the
software from Sprint.

I actually subscribe to the bc.personal service, which is nice, you're
right.. but, doesn't allow for a true hotsync. (If you know a way,
please tell me- I may have overlooked something!). It allows me to
login to my computer and see outlook & my files in real time, but I use
Act for my schedule and keeping Act and outlook synchronized has become
too much work, so I would prefer to simply hotsync and keep my palm and
act synchronized without outlook in the middle.

There is a sync feature built in to Act if I remeber correctly. That might
do exactly what you want. I'm not 100% sure how to use it anymore but when I
was.... you know what.. I just remembered, it won't work for you. You're
trying to snyc a Palm and a Desktop, not two desktops. I do remember seeing
that the i500 can be done over the Internet, I just don't remember where I
saw it. If I find I'll drop you a note. Have you tried looking in the User
Manual? The version i have is fairly extensive. I'll take a look there for
you also and if I find it we'll touch base.

Thanks. I've read the manuals on bc.personal connection and on
palm/hotsync. The i500 doesn't tell you anything about how to use its
internal modem for *anything* much less hotsynching and the bc.personal
connection does what it's supposed to do.. but it's not supposed to
help you do a standard hotsync.
It's strange, though, that I'm able to have the phone dial into the
desktop and I hear the handshaking modems. It clearly sounds as though
we connect, but it gets dropped after a minute or so. I'm sure there
must be a modem init string for the desktop or for the phone that will
allow them to properly communicate...

This might sound stupid but did you check off the modem setting on the hot
sync icon in the task bar? I can't see why it wouldn't sync, it should. I'll
have to play with it myself.

I found the following in the i500 User Giude from Samsung. If you have
broadband you can sign up for no-ip at www.no-ip.com (if your ISP assigns
you a dynamic IP) for a free account. The only thing you need to do is find
out what port needs to be open and configure your firewall accordingly and
follow the directions below. I read through them and they seem fairly
straight forward but you need more help let me know. I hope this helps you
out.
Question: How can I do a HotSync modem sync with my i500?
Answer: Due to the design of the Sprint PCS Vision network, you
CANNOT do a modem sync. However, if your system is on the Internet,
you can, instead do a Network sync. Please see "Performing a HotSync
Operation via a Network" on page 156 of the Online User Manual for
instructions on how to set up a network sync.
Performing a HotSync® Operation via a Network
When you use the Network HotSync software, you can take advantage of
the LAN and WAN connectivity available in many office environments.
The Network HotSync software allows you to perform a HotSync
operation by dialing in to a network or by using a cradle that is
connected to any computer on your LAN or WAN (provided that the
computer connected to the cradle also has the Network HotSync software
installed, your computer is on, and the HotSync Manager is running).
The Network HotSync software requires the following:
Your computer has TCP/IP support installed.
Section 2: Understanding Your Phone
2Q: Advanced HotSync 155
Both your company's network system and its remote access server
support TCP/IP. (Your system administrator has this information.)
You have a remote access account. (If you don't have an account,
consult your system administrator.)
Everything you need to connect to your company's dial-in server
(network modem) is included with PalmTM Desktop software and your
phone software. You need to activate the feature, however, on both Palm
Desktop software and your phone.
Performing a Network HotSync Operation
1. Click the HotSync Manager icon in the Windows task bar to open the
HotSync Manager.
2. From the HotSync Manager menu, click Network.
3. From the HotSync Manager menu, click Setup.
4. Click the Network tab. Click on the user name to select. A check
mark is placed next to the user name.
5. Click OK.
6. Perform a HotSync operation as normal.
Note: During the HotSync operation, the desktop computer network
information is stored on your phone. With this information, your phone can
locate the computer when performing a HotSync operation over the
network.
Setting up your phone for Network HotSync
1. Tap the Applications Launcher icon .
2. Tap the HotSync icon .
3. Tap the Menu Launcher icon .
4. Select Options and tap Modem Sync Prefs.
5. Tap Network.
6. Tap OK to exit.

By the way, the PDF guide I have is 217 pages long and went into great
detail on the hotsync features. You might want to see if you can get a copy
of the one I have. I think I got it from Samsung's website but not sure. The
file is 2.17 MB (2,284,391 bytes). I might have changed the file name on
mine but what I have it called is samsungi500.pdf. I might or might not have
changed the file name so you might not be able to find it under this name. I
can email it to you if you like as long as you can accept a file that size.

Please keep in mind the fact that, for some inexplicable reason, there
is no option for encrypted network synchronization. This means that
while you /can/ synch over the net, anyone who is sniffing along the
path can see any data that are being synched.
If you store any critical personal data on your i500 (bank passwords,
etc.), you might want to avoid performing network synchronizations via
Vision.
