We had our current 2 phones for 6 years and now upgrading our plan to a
family plan and adding a 3rd line. I understand that the 3rd phone gets
the instant rebate just like a new customer. But this is what I was
offered ( I think it is a fair deal)

$70 for the Fair and Flexible 800 minutes.
$10 for the 3rd line.
Free nights and weekends starting at 7pm
Free pcs to pcs
$5 for Vision Picture Package for the 3rd line (includes 100 text messages)
5% off my bill.

If I opt for the Nokia 6016I the 2 phones will be FREE.
If I opt for the Samsung A740 the rep. says that it will be $79.99
(basically instant rebate for the phone upgrades) and $60 courtesy
credit to make it same as the web offer

I think the deal is a very fair offer. The only question is how good is
the Samsung A740 phones. Anybody has experience with them? I went to
phonescoop.com and there were very few reviews, probably 5.

I like the Sanyo 8200 and have heard good things about that phone.
Reviews are good on phonescoop.com (53 reviews). But if we opt for this
phone, the rep. says I would have to wait for the mail in rebate and I
lose the $60 courtesy credit, hence making the phones $79.99 each but I
would have to fork out $229 and wait for the $150 rebate in the mail.

Is the Sanyo 8200 really much better than the Samsung A740? Advise?

You couldn't give me another Samsung. I've owned the N200 and N400.
While Samsung generally has nice feature sets on their phones,... the
problem I' and many other customers have complained about is the
reception (radio) quality in border line signal strength situations.
It appears to be sub par to that of Sanyo and other mfgs.

Some are. However, my VGA-1000 is most definitely not (Google for my recent
comments on that)... I can even hold a call by the cement plant out in northern
Victorville where many other phones (regardless of carrier) drop calls. It's
amazing. And the newest Samsung phones are supposed to do real well with RF too.

Of the current phones, I can confirm that the 660 is a poor RF performer,
having owned one. The 680 may not be (if it's even still around), but I
understand it has some firmware bugs. The 740 and newer models are supposed to
handle weak signals quite well.

I've been happy with the Samsungs I've had, and the RF quality of my
recent VGA-1000 and current A680 is very good - equal to or better than
my wife's Sanyo 8100, which I've read is better than its replacement,
the 8200.

Good to hear that Frank. I have had my Samsung sch 3500 since 1999 and
it is still going strong. So if your A680(which I heard is comparable
to the current A740) is comparable to your wife's 8100 or better (and
that the 8100 is better than its replacement the 8200)I guess it makes
perfect sense for me to go ahead with ordering three A740 especially if
we are given more discounts and credits than ordering the Sanyo 8200.

Just out of curiosity, how many batteries have you gone through so far?

Yes, that is exactly what I told my spouse,that those 2 Samsung sch 3500
are antiques. Maybe Samsung wants it for their museum like how Mercedes
gets the old cars with over 300K miles for their advertisements. lol

Btw, we still have our original batteries and original extended
batteries that we bought when we purchased the phones. Therefore each
one of us has 2 sets of batteries. Still the originals!!!!! The
extended batteries are what we use on a daily basis. It can last for a
week on standby. We have travelled up and down the Eastern seaboard and
have no problem with our signal etc. except maybe in parts of Maine.

Also as I had mentioned, we are changing our plan to the Family Fair and
Flexible(was offered $80 for 800 minutes to be share between 3
lines,Free pcs2pcs and free nt&wkend 7pm , nothing to sing about. New
customers get that as well)to add a 3rd line. My husband just told me
today that I can upgrade and get a new phone but he is happy with his
Samsung sch 3500. There is nothing wrong with it and why should he pay
more money for a new phone. Can someone please talk to him for me??????
Geez we are going to sign a 2 year contract and he wants to keep his 6
year old phone.

So Bob how is the Samsung A740? Heard any good or bad things about that
phone?

Hey CM, I don't have a A740. I just jumped into this thread because you
mentioned the 3500. I switched to Sanyo 4 yrs ago with a 4700. The wife has
that phone, and I've been using a Sanyo 5300 for 30 months now.

NOpe have to pay $5 depending on which phone we pick. If it has picture
then the Vision Picture package. If not then just the Vision package
that includes the 100 text messages.

Yep. I've been all-Samsung myself. 1000 (my first cell phone), 2000 (it
seemed so small back then), 3500 (several), A460 (worst), VGA-1000
(beautiful screen, best sound), A680 (best reception).

Like Bob, I still have a 3500 charger plugged in, because I use an old,
unactivated 3500 in Field Debug mode when I go on a serious cell site
search. It's easier to hold and the display is much easier to read in
daylight than my newer phones. Field Debug mode on a 3500 is
Menu-9-0-040793-1. I know you can get to it on an A740 but I don't have
the menus handy. Try Menu-Settings-Display-0-0404793-1.
