Maybe a dumb question

I'm gettin a Dell w/ an Intel 2.53 and 256MB of PC2700. My question is, I'm not going to be doing any heavy video editing or heavy apps, but I want to up the memory. Should I get 256mb of crucial for $34 or 512mb of Corsair for $55? I just figured I'd save a few bucks if I really didn't need the extra RAM, but the deal on the Corsair is kinda nice. Thanks.

A 256MB upgrade is sufficient in this case. Though I would be somewhat cautious about mixing non-identical memory modules in one motherboard.

Do you suggest getting memory from Dell, or checking first to see what kind of modules are in the system first and then match it?

I would perform the upgrade through Dell - great service. Would be easier that way also.
