I have 4 of those hard drives and they are very quiet, I would say something is wrong with it. Try the Data Lifeguard Tools such as DLG diagnostic test found at the Western Digital website to test the drive, if it is faulty at all it should give you an error number to apply for RMA return to Western Digital.

From Western Digital:
These utilities are individual components that make up the Data Lifeguard Tools Ver. 10. They may be downloaded and extracted on systems running Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, and XP. However, the files contained in the zip files must be extracted and copied to a bootable floppy for use.

The Diagnostics utility allows you to test the drive, print results for last drive tested, repair errors found during the Test Drive option and write zeros to the drive (low-level format).
