I just bought a new Western Digital WD1200JB Hard Drive and the operating noise is unbearable. I am using this drive as a secondary storage for video editing but the noise it makes is very loud. I was wondering if this is normal. The idle noise of the drive is louder than my pc with its 3 fans, cpu fan, and ps fan. All the hard drives I have ever used are quite quiet and I have read many things online syaing that it should not be noisy. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have 4 of those hard drives and they are very quiet, I would say something is wrong with it. Try the Data Lifeguard Tools such as DLG diagnostic test found at the Western Digital website to test the drive, if it is faulty at all it should give you an error number to apply for RMA return to Western Digital.

The Diagnostics utility allows you to test the drive, print results for last drive tested, repair errors found during the Test Drive option and write zeros to the drive (low-level format).

Good luck!

Another testimony to these drives being quiet. Have 14 of the WD SE drives, 9 of them being the 120GB's and they are all very quiet.

Yes the drive is definately still under warranty. The noise is very odd because its like a buzzing noise with a metallic sound to it. I'm going to run the diagnostics now. Thanks for the help
